How to use Anthropic's new AI coworker (and when it actually makes sense)

If you've been following my work for a while, you know I'm not a tool pusher.

I don't get excited about every new AI release. Most of them are incremental. Most of them don't change how you actually work.

But....

...we need to talk about Claude.

Within 40 days, Anthropic dropped two major updates. One of them is Cowork. And with 11 role-specific open-source plugins now available, it's creating real buzz across the AI space.

Why this matters for business leaders: Cowork uses the same agentic system as Claude Code, but makes it accessible to non-technical users. Your marketing lead, your ops manager, your analyst. They can now run sophisticated AI workflows without touching a terminal.

That said, before we dive into use cases, you need to understand when to use each tool. This is where most people get it wrong.

Use Cowork When It Makes Sense

Think of Claude's ecosystem as three distinct workspaces:

  • Claude Chat is where you brainstorm, plan, and organize. Set up your Claude Projects with custom instructions. Everything lives in the cloud. This is your planning space.
  • Cowork is where you get work done. Think of it as "Claude Code for non-technicals." It has local file access, can spin up parallel agents, and is designed to complete work end to end. This is your AI digital coworker.
  • Claude Code is where you build. Create custom skills, code files, applications, plugins, complex integrations. Whether through the Desktop version or the terminal, this is where you create the reusable systems that make everything else more powerful.

Quick tip: You can build complex stuff inside Cowork, but it isn't designed for that. I've found the building experience in Claude Code Desktop is smoother and more reliable.

Six Ways to Put Cowork to Work

1. Claude Project + Cowork for Repeatable Workflows

Most of us already have Claude Projects set up with custom instructions and context files. But every time, you're still uploading files and copying outputs manually.

Cowork changes that.

Set up a project folder on your computer with your raw materials: call transcripts, briefs, research files, templates.

Add your existing Claude Project to Cowork (click "Add to Cowork" from any project). It pulls in your custom instructions automatically.

Point Cowork to your working folder, give it the prompt, and it follows your exact workflow. Everything saves locally.

Tip: Put files directly in your working folder instead of uploading them. Local file access is the whole point.

2. Marketing Creative Pipeline

Cowork can spin up multiple agents working in parallel. This is powerful for automated batch jobs like ad creative generation.

Set up your project folder with raw product images, a master planner spreadsheet, and your creative guidelines.

In Cowork, select the project folder and enable your relevant MCP connector.

In your prompt, explicitly ask Cowork to split the work into parallel tasks: one generates ad image variations, another researches and writes product descriptions.

Ask it to update the master spreadsheet when finished.

Tip: Always include a master planner spreadsheet in your folder. It acts as the control center for batch jobs. Claude updates it as tasks complete, giving you a clear record of what's done and where every file lives.

3. Data Analysis and Reporting

Point Cowork to an entire repository of datasets. It will analyze everything and turn insights into multiple deliverables in one go.

Organize your data files in a project folder alongside a brand context file (optional, so Claude understands your business, audience, and goals). Ask Claude to perform parallel tasks: analyze all data files, build an interactive dashboard, and create a strategy deck with tailored recommendations.

For large datasets, ask Claude to create a progress tracker so it checks off each file as it goes.

Tip: Define a clear scope even for large repositories. Ask Claude to do self-verification before delivering the final response. Better performance, better token efficiency.

4. Browser-Based Task Automation

With the Claude in Chrome MCP connector, you can delegate tedious browser tasks that would take hours manually. Think: tracking AI search results, capturing cited sources, analyzing competitor pages, generating reports.

Install and enable the Claude in Chrome MCP connector plus the Chrome extension. Give Claude a specific task: search 10 queries in Google AI Mode, capture the top cited URLs and domains, generate a tracking spreadsheet and summary report. Claude browses in real time on your behalf. Everything saves locally.

Tip: Be specific about which data points to capture and which pages to visit. Structured instructions mean cleaner, more reliable output. You can even turn this workflow into a reusable skill.

5. Custom Skills in Cowork

Cowork works great with official skills and MCP tools. But the real power comes from custom skills tailored to your workflows.

Use Claude Code to build your custom skill (or use the native skill builder from Claude chat). Define the workflow in detail. Then install the skill in Cowork and trigger it whenever you need it.

Tip: Before building from scratch, check if there's an official skill you can extend. Know which MCP connections you need so you include them during creation.

6. Skills and Plugins

Custom Skills are reusable instruction sets that teach Claude how to execute specific tasks consistently. A landing page audit skill, a content brief skill. Create it once, refine it, use it anywhere inside Claude.

Plugins take this further. Think of them as ready-to-use toolkits containing your skills, commands, agents, and MCP connections, all packaged together.

The key distinction:

  • Commands you trigger manually, so execution is predictable
  • Skills are triggered automatically by Claude depending on context

The biggest advantage of Plugins: you're not sharing pieces. You're sharing the entire setup with your team.

Tip: Start with official Plugins from Claude's library to understand the structure. Build your own once you know which workflows you actually repeat. You only need a custom plugin when you need distribution and standardization across a team.

Claude is becoming an ecosystem. 2026 is the year where you have to find out which combination of tools, skills, plugins etc. fits the way your team actually works.

Everything is becoming possible. Now, it's about finding the most effective setup for your team. That's exactly what I do with Dualis Studio. More content on this soon. Stay tuned.
